I remember as a kid, trying to sleep in my school clothes for the next day, just so I could have a little more time to sleep in a few extra minutes. I’ve never really been a big morning person, but because I’m a mom with mostly school aged kids, it’s not until the weekends that I get to live out my slow morning fantasies.
For me, the week days are reserved for routine and practicalities and sometimes I do feel like a bit of a warden, keeping track of my flock right down to each minute -until they’ve all hit the door heading off to their daily lives. But I’ve also learned all too well that how you start your day off can ultimately set the tone for the rest of it.
That’s why I’ve put together a list of several awesome morning rituals that kick butt and that’ll get you feeing amped in the mornings.
Morning Ritual #1: Hydrate
Getting fluids in your body as soon as you wake up helps your body flush out toxins first thing in the morning. I usually keep a bottle of water by my bedside so I can just take a quick drink upon awakening and this helps me feel more refreshed in the mornings.
Morning Ritual #2: Do A Easy Breathing Exercise
Deep breathing exercises have many imperative benefits, hands down, like preventing air from getting trapped in your lungs, which can cause you to feel a shortness of breath. So as you can see a result, you can breathe in more fresh air.
1. Have a sit down with your elbows slightly back. This will allow your chest to expand more fully.
2. Inhale deeply through your nose.
3. Hold your breath for a count of two.
4. Slowly release the air through a deep exhale through your nose, until you feel all of the inhaled air has been released.
Morning Ritual #3: Stretch
Nothing feels quite as amazing as a nice stretch in the morning right after, or even right before you roll out of bed. A light stretch can loosen your muscles, letting your body know that it’s a green light to get moving for the day.
Morning Ritual #4: Morning Meditation
This doesn’t have to be a long meditation. I usually do a quick 3 minutes meditation because I have a home full of teens and pre-teens also getting ready for their day. Sometimes I like to step outside and simply press play as I listen to my favorite guided meditation and this usually sets me up for my next morning ritual.
Morning Ritual #5: Create A Positive Mantra or Affirmation For The Day
A mantra or positive affirmation is a phrase or sound that can be chanted aloud or repeated silently, for the purpose of enhancing concentration in a positive way. Mantras and positive affirmations allow you to be truly present, silencing any chaos and noise and allowing you to be fully present in the now. Once I have my daily affirmation in place I know it’s time to add a little fuel to my day.
Morning Ritual #6: Breakfast Time
I‘m actually not a huge breakfast person, but even if I’m not that hungry in the mornings, I still try to enjoy a little something. I prefer a lighter breakfast or light morning snack like a handful of almonds, a few berries or a tropical trail mix so I don’t feel too bogged down. Enjoying a good breakfast will help fuel your brain so you can be ready to take on the day.
